UMR and UWC OFFER GEOLOGY FIELD SCHOOL IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 2004

With funding provided by the UMSAEP Committee, UMR Professor Bob Laudon organized and conducted the UMR Geology Summer Field Camp in South Africa in cooperation with Reggie Domoney and colleagues in Earth Science at the University of the Western Cape. Twenty UMR students joined 48 students from UWC鈥檚 field camp. The UMR and UWC students worked together on common field projects and developed a strong sense of mutual respect and friendship. Among other highlights in this special learning experience, the students went more than 5,000 feet underground and experienced first-hand observations of more than 100 years of mining conditions in South Africa. The students also engaged in field mapping.

Professor Laudon summed up the field school in the following way: 鈥淚n my 24 years of teaching this course, I have never seen as much enthusiasm for field camp as I saw this summer.鈥

One of the UMR students wrote: 鈥淏efore going on the trip, I read three books on South Africa, each written during different historical periods of the last century. I had my expectations, but was totally surprised by what I experienced in the new South Africa.鈥

Several of the South African students have applied to come to the U.S. to attend the UMR field camp in Utah. In addition, several areas of joint research between UMR and UWC were identified.

MU AND UWC OFFER LAW SUMMER SCHOOL AT UWC

The MU School of Law joined with the UWC School of Law in offering a summer program for UM and UWC students in Cape Town in June and July 2004. The program, directed by MU Professor Rod Uphoff, enrolled 22 students from the U.S. who joined South African students in taking courses in criminal justice and alternative dispute resolution. Based on the success of the 2004 summer school, the MU and UWC law schools are planning to organize a joint 2005 summer program.

In cooperation with Ron Turner, UWC Professor Jan Persens invited Dr. Kate O鈥橠ubhchair, director of the Peace Building Centre in Ireland, and Professor Bart Wechsler and Professor Jim Scott from the MU Truman School for Public Affairs to explore ways to link Missouri, Ireland and South Africa in areas of mutual interest. The Missouri and Irish representatives met with counterparts in the UWC School of Government and other departments engaged in community capacity building focused on peace and conflict studies programming, citizen participation and community well being. Proposals for further cooperation are under development.

ROBBEN ISLAND SPORT HISTORY PROJECT PROPOSED FOR BBC DOCUMENTARY

UMSL Professor Chuck Korr has been invited by the BBC to develop plans for a major documentary film based on his research on the role of sport among political prisoners on Robben Island during the apartheid era.
